Crockett Elementary school is located in Phoenix, just north of the airport, and is a K-6th grade school. It also includes a special needs preschool for ages 3 to 5. Most of the Crockett families are Hispanic immigrant or African refugees. Nearly 90% of students speak English as their second language. The remaining 10% of the students live in homeless shelters with their families.
School officials say that developing good reading skills is essential for academic success now and in the future. "If these kids have a coach, a mentor, someone who listens to them and encourages them, it can make a huge difference in their lives," says Lynn Johnson, Tempe South Stake Public Affairs Director. "What's more, our volunteers come away with an added insight and dimension in their own lives."If you would be interested in volunteering for one hour per week, you will be able to work in a classroom on a regular basis and get to know the children you work with. If you can only go occasionally, volunteers are also needed in the library and for other school projects, as your schedule permits.
